Tom Rolt Centenary Legacy

To mark the centenary of the birth of Tom Rolt, co-founder of the IWA and author of the hugely influential book Narrow Boat, British Waterways (BW) is teaming up with the IWA and The Waterways Trust to deliver a programme of youth engagement in Summer 2010. The music-led celebrations will culminate in Tom Rolt inspired musical workshops and performances at the IWA’s Tom Rolt Centenary Rally in Chester on 26 and 27 June.

A bridge too far - irresponsible drivers give British Waterways the hump

British Waterways is asking speeding motorists to slow down when crossing the 200 year-old hump-back bridges that span the nation’s historic canal network. Each year, British Waterways spends up to £2.5million fixing the damage caused by irresponsible drivers, diverting vital resources away from maintaining the 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in its care.

The man who saved our industrial heritage

Centenary of the birth of Tom Rolt. This Thursday thousands of people interested in Britain’s industrial heritage will be raising a glass to toast the centenary of L.T.C. (Tom) Rolt’s birth on 11 February 1910. Rolt is responsible for saving one of the world’s greatest collections of industrial heritage in the form of Britain’s canal and railway network.

Setting a new course - Britain's waterways in the third sector

British Waterways has today published a report on its proposals to secure the future of the nation’s 200-year-old canals and navigable rivers by creating a 'national trust' for the waterways. The move to the third sector from direct state control has been met with wide-ranging support since its proposal in May. The publication of Setting a new course, Britain’s waterways in the third sector aims to advance the debate, promote discussion and further inform stakeholders’ views.

Licence evasion reduced by a further 1.5%

The total number of unlicensed boats on BW waterways has fallen by a further 1.5% during 2009. Despite the harder times of the credit crunch, 94.7% of the 31,400 boats on BW’s canals and rivers are now fully paid up licence holders.
